Farm Business Innovation Show 2025: The Debrief
It was great to be back in Birmingham’s NEC for the Farm Business Innovation Show 2025.
Over the two days, we had the pleasure of connecting with many entrepreneurial landowners and farmers seeking new and innovative ways to diversify land and income beyond traditional farming.
It was inspiring to see the sector come together in times of challenge and change to share new ideas, commercial success stories and their plans to drive long-term sustainable growth.
BNG: Credible new income stream in the rural economy
What struck us this year compared to previous was the deep level understanding and appetite for BNG as one of the most credible new income streams in the rural economy. A signifier that the BNG market is maturing and that the benefits to farmers and landowners are starting to be felt - a viable mechanism to retain land, unlock revenue, improve the landscape and protect it for future generations.
Biofarm: A different approach to BNG
For some, there remains some apprehension around committing land to BNG for 30+ years. We understand that, and that’s why we approach things a little bit differently.
At Biofarm, our model allows for farming operations to continue alongside habitat creation. We transform the land in stages, creating BNG on small parcels of land and then investing in the sale of the BNG units created. Once sold, we then move onto the next parcel of land, and so on. This means that farmers and landowners can continue to benefit from the land not yet being used for BNG.
It also means multiple paydays. We pay upfront for each parcel of land as it’s unlocked, and then return 60% of the profit generated from every unit sale.
We find this flexible approach works best for developers too. It means we can create bespoke BNG habitat sites to meet specific BNG needs - which is fundamental to planning approval.
Our fair and transparent pricing also provides assurance that most of the profit is delivered straight into the hands of those who make it possible - the farmers and the landowners.
